Green Initiatives
Blair is committed and focused on the responsible use of our natural resources. We meet many of the ISO 14000 Certification requirements. From updating our designs to retrofitting all of our facilities to providing energy management solutions on our new products, Blair engineering is pushing the limits in this fast changing environment.
More attention to environmental concerns has also been an issue, affecting fluorescent lamp disposal, packing materials and scrap recycling. We use environmentally friendly approaches wherever available and focus considerable resources on the latest energy conservation and sustainability technologies. LED’s and electronic ballasts continue to improve and are now our standard due to their long-life, flexibility and low power consumption. T8 and long-life HO T12 lamps are being incorporated that provide up to 60,000 hours operating life.
Current Green initiatives include:
- Blair's sign division has broad expertise in the design and implementation of LED lighting systems for a variety of uses, including sign illumination, electronic price change units, and electronic message centers. Blair's experience includes an exclusive contract to supply LED products to all BP North American sites.
- Painting - Our plants have spray booths that meet the most stringent VOC emissions standards available in their class. All waste materials from ourpainting process are reclaimed to the fullest extent possible. The remaining waste is baked or incinerated under the guidelines of theDEP to assure no long-term detriment to the environment.
- Packaging - Our letter sets are shipped whenever possible using recycled paper packing materials. Blair’s largest paper use is packing materials. 100% of this packing material is from post-consumer sources.
- Other Recycling - Blair separates and recycles all possible aluminum, steel and plastic. We also have cardboard bailing equipment that enables us to separate and recycle all incoming cardboard packing materials.
- Neon tube disposal - Significant quantities of fluorescent and/or argon/mercury filled tubes are disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.
- Blair's coal division has removed millions of tons of waste coal from old mine sites. This low-sulfur coal is burned cleanly, while the ash is returned to the old mine sites that can then be replanted. This cycle significantly reduces acid runoff from these sites, many of which have contributed to acid runoff into streams for many decades. Blair has been recognized by the DEP for its work in cleaning up these abandoned sites.
- Blair's lighting division is an OEM distributor for all major lighting manufactures for commercial light fixtures, including decorative units for retail spaces, commercial grade fixtures for offices, and high-bay fixtures for big-box retailers, factories and warehouses. Blair electronics engineers are on the leading edge of lighting technology to assist national chains in selecting and rolling out the best products. Blair's sign and lighting divisions have broad experience with all commercial light sources, including LEDs, Compact Fluorescents (CFL), Cold Cathode Fluorescents (CCFL), T8 and T5 Fluorescents, as well as traditional light sources.
- Blair's paper division produces 100,000 tons per year of 99% recycled paper. Three 2.2-megawatt windmills are under review to make this facility 100% energy independent.
- Blair owns and manages over 4 million SF of real estate. All properties are undergoing energy audits and efficiency upgrades. Blair's real estate division reviews all new construction for LEED certification to assure cost-effective, environment-friendly development.
